Cloud Intro
Introduction to cloud, OpenStack and technology terms
Term: virtualization
- providing a system and its environment
- often the same or similar architecture as underlying bare metal system
- emulation of foreign architectures possible
- usually more than just a virtual system
- network
- storage
- full virtualization vs. para virtualization
<notes>
- explain virtualization vs. emulation
- explain difference full virtualization (simulation of hardware) and para virtualization (special devices, faster)
</notes>
Term: hypervisor
- a software for providing virtualization
- qemu/kvm, Xen, vmWare, HyperV, …
- provides a virtual environment
- also: a (bare metal) host for running hypervisor software
Term: virtual machine
- a virtual computer
- virtual resources (CPU, RAM, disk, …) provides by hypervisor / virtual environment
- often using predefined storage (image)
- referred to as instance in cloud environment
Term: cloud
- ambiguous, overloaded marketing term
- IaaS: infrastructure as a service
- provides an environment for virtual machines
- including network, storage, …
- also PaaS, SaaS, DaaS, FaaS, LBaaS, …
Cloud vs. Virtualization
- virtualization is base for cloud
- pets vs. cattle
- specialized virtualization management software for pets (e.g. vmWare)
- cloud management software for cattle (Amazon EC2, Microsoft Azure, Openstack, …)
